Existing
businesses are a critical factor in
the successful long term economic
development of the County. Although
business attraction tends to be a
big focus in economic development,
it is estimated that about 75% of
employment growth in an area is generated
by existing businesses. Existing businesses
also form the economic foundation
of our community, providing jobs for
local residents and tax revenue for
the County.
One of the key tactics in accomplishing
the mission of EDC is the development
of a Business Retention and Expansion
program (BRE) for businesses located
in our county. Through a collaborative
effort between St. Lucie County's
Strategic & Economic Development
Division, Workforce Development Board
of the Treasure Coast, St. Lucie County's
Chamber of Commerce and the Economic
Development Council of St. Lucie County,
the BRE Program is working to gain
a better understanding of the local
economy, local companies, and potential
changes by visiting businesses already
established within the county.
The BRE Program tries to identify
the following:
- Companies at risk - Companies
that are considering closing or
relocating. We attempt to address
the concerns before the companies
close or relocate.
- Companies ready for expansion
- Companies that are ripe for expansion.
We attempt to find ways we can assist
in that expansion.
- Company business needs - Uncover
business needs, local factors, or
trends that might lead a company
to shutdown, relocate or expand.
- Communication - Establish an
on-going communication between the
public and private sector, and build
a pro-business attitude for local
businesses.
- Knowledge - Build a knowledge
base of how the local economy works.
The County's continued growth is
dependant on retaining and growing
our existing business base. If you
are interested in participating in
the Business Retention & Expansion
Program, or if you desire assistance
with business related issues, please
